Are We Willing to Say Yes?
Today’s Reading: Luke 1:26–38

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered.
(v. 38 NIV)

Do you ever wonder why God includes us in His work? Why does He bother? I’m sure He could do it all by himself far more efficiently, which makes me wonder why His loving plan includes us.

And yet, He always invites us along.

Take Jesus’s mother, Mary. A young woman with no merit of her own was called to bear and then raise the very Son of God. Imagine for a minute being Mary. An angel appears and gives you impossible news. How do you explain to your mother that a holy being proclaimed you’re going to have a baby?

She’s not going to believe you. Mothers know better than this.

Then, once things settle down and you have a husband and a thin veneer of respectability again, how do you go about raising the very One who brought the world into being? Impossible. Can’t be done. Not with human ability, anyway.

God didn’t need Mary. But God still wanted to include her in His loving plan. Thousands of years later we remember her response: “I am the Lord’s servant. . . . May your word to me be fulfilled” (v. 38).

Are we willing to believe that God loves us enough to include us in His work? I pray this Advent season renews our willingness to follow Mary’s example and welcome the chance to join God’s amazing plan.

May our prayer be, “Lord, I’m yours. May everything happen just the way you please.”
