Counting the Days
Today’s Reading: Matthew 1:18–23

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
(v. 22–23 NIV)

Does anyone get more excited for Christmas than children? I doubt it! To kids, the days leading up to Christmas seem like an eternity. They open little flaps or put stickers on an Advent calendar for weeks heading up to the big day. Counting those days until Christmas may not make them pass by more quickly—but it stirs anticipation as the children see fewer and fewer days remaining.

Just as children eagerly await Christmas each year, believers of old eagerly waited for the arrival of the Messiah. His birth was not what many people expected. With humble surroundings and a manger for a bed, His entrance into the world was hardly fit for a King. But heavenly angels announced His birth, and the sky lit up to let the world know the promised Messiah had come.

Christmas is about giving, and Jesus is the greatest gift ever given. Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus with family and friends. Christmas is a time to share God’s love with those He has put near us. And if you have children in your life, Christmas is the perfect time to remind them how much God loves them.

God loves all of us more than we can imagine. He loves us so much that He sent Jesus to be our Savior. Now that’s worth celebrating!
